From Pandemic Layoff to A Purpose-Driven Business.
With the pandemic came redundancy. Driven by the vision of a disability-inclusive business, I embarked on a journey. Practice license secured, guest bedroom converted into an office – and Heywood-MacDonald Accountancy Services was born. Well ok, it wasn’t quite that easy, but you get the idea!
After a few months, I rented an office on a local industrial estate and started to build a small team. In the second year, we tried to move to a bigger office, but a last minute set-back forced us to think creatively (turns out, that’s one of our superpowers). We realised that by ditching the physical office idea altogether and embracing a virtual working model, we would reduce our carbon footprint significantly. We also went paperless and redirected the “office budget” to enhance employee well-being.
Going into our third year, we have continued to reduce our carbon footprint. We are now a completely virtual business, Green Small Business Certified, Good Business Charter Accredited, a Disability Confident Employer, and named one of the Small Biz 100 in 2023. We are on track to submit our B-Corp application this year.
Through a deep understanding (through experience and education) of diverse disabilities, we specialise in empowering disabled and neurodivergent entrepreneurs by providing personalised support. Our greatest reward is seeing our amazing clients overcome barriers and achieve anything they set their mind to.
