Chloë Haywoods’ design journey has had a vibrant path, not only because she thrives on colour, but principally because of the different processes she has used to create, and therefore the products she conceives.

Primarily her innovative small business came into fruition as an award winning millinery business, designing hats that were sold in Fenwick, Bond Street and seen in publications such as Vogue, Elle, The Times and Cosmopolitan.

Her unusual headpieces were more commonly described as ‘sculptures’, and the inspiration always came from the materials used. The beauty of a tiny remnant of vintage ribbon or the love of a faded damaged sisal straw hat, set the scene for a beautiful (and essentially) upcycled accessory.

But being a seasonal accessory, Chloë looked for more challenges, and after a rebrand, her work has evolved into designing and making smaller fashion and homewear accessories too.

Her love of upcycling and colour is at the core of her designs, but the concept of reusing waste has made such a huge impact on her passion for her business and everything involved in it, that now she classes herself as a Circular Designer.

With her ongoing campaign #Want YourWoolies she receives damaged garments and accessories made from cashmere, leather, waterproof fabric (such as what you’d find from a broken umbrella), and when she gets enough of a stash of one kind of material, she starts playing and designing to make a capsule collection with it.

If she needs a bulk amount of a particular type of fabric, she calls upon a charity she works closely with, and from those donations, will sift through the damaged garments they couldn’t sell in their stores, so the waste stays in the UK, gets reused, and therefore saves landfill, plus a portion of the cost of the product, goes straight back to the charity.

Any waste that Chloë produces, she reintegrates into other designs, or passes onto to other designers to be reused. For example, one designer likes her cashmere offcuts and uses them to felt with, and another likes the seams from jumper seams to create macrame lampshades.

Chloë was thrilled to be a SBS winner and then a finalist in the Blue Patch Circular Economy Award last year.
