My Bio

Sandra Vick – Artist, Designer, and Nature Enthusiast

I am Sandra Vick, an artist and designer living at the edge of the beautiful Pentland Hills near Edinburgh. My passion for art began later in life, leading me to study at Edinburgh College of Art, where I developed a love for depicting British wildlife, particularly birds. Inspired by nature's beauty, I create unique, minimalist designs that capture the essence of our natural surroundings.

Through my business, Sandra Vick Ltd, I offer a range of gifts and homewares that bring the elegance of the outdoors into everyday living spaces. Each piece, from bone china to textiles, is carefully crafted to reflect the delicate beauty of British birds. Sustainability is at the heart of my work, with all items made in the UK using eco-friendly packaging.

Balancing my career as an artist with being a mother, I cherish connecting with customers and sharing the stories behind my designs. My work aims to celebrate our connection to nature, fostering a deeper appreciation for the wildlife around us.

My Business Tips

1. Know Your Niche
Find what makes your business unique and lean into it. My focus on British wildlife, especially birds, allows me to stand out in the crowded market of homewares. A clear niche not only guides your design choices but also helps you connect with your target audience.

2. Build Genuine Connections
Engage with your customers directly whenever possible. Whether it's through social media, markets, or small shops, personal interactions foster loyalty and provide valuable feedback. Your story matters - share it and show the passion behind your products.

3. Quality Over Quantity
Prioritise quality, from your materials to your customer service. Customers appreciate well-crafted, reliable products, and investing in quality will build a strong reputation and encourage repeat business. In my case, all products are handmade in the UK, ensuring durability and craftsmanship.

4. Embrace Sustainability
Consumers are increasingly mindful of their environmental impact. Use eco-friendly materials and packaging to align with this growing trend. My switch to recycled and biodegradable packaging not only reflects my commitment to the environment but also appeals to like-minded customers.

5. Adapt and Innovate
Keep experimenting with your craft and stay open to new ideas. Whether it's learning a new technique, exploring different media, or offering fresh products, like my shift to ceramics, evolving your business keeps it exciting and relevant.

6. Use Social Media Wisely
Harness social media platforms to showcase your products and tell your story. Visual platforms like Instagram are perfect for artists and designers, allowing you to share not just your products but also the process, inspiration, and behind-the-scenes moments.

7. Start Small, Then Scale
Don’t be afraid to start small and test your market. Begin with a few products to see what resonates with customers, then expand your offerings. I started with a single collection and gradually added more, allowing for steady, sustainable growth.

8. Stay True to Your Values
Keep your business rooted in values you believe in. For me, it’s about celebrating nature and creating beautiful, sustainable homewares. Sticking to your core values will guide decisions and help maintain authenticity as your business grows.

9. Learn from Feedback
Listen to your customers—they are your best source of insight. Take constructive criticism as a chance to improve, and celebrate positive feedback to understand what’s working well.

10. Celebrate Small Wins
Running a business can be a long journey, so celebrate every milestone, big or small. Each success, from getting a new stockist to positive customer feedback, is a step forward that deserves recognition.
